Tallis Spem in Alium
Górecki Totus tuus
Lauridsen Fire Songs
Jaakko Mäntyjärvi Iste Mundus (world premiere)
James MacMillan Miserere
Madrigals by Monteverdi and Gesualdo
Opera choruses by Puccini and Mascagni
In an imaginative programme, the sumptuous harmonies of 16th and 17th century motets and madrigals by Monteverdi and Gesualdo are contrasted with contemporary works by a variety of composers, including the dramatic Fire Songs, settings of Italian Renaissance poems by Morten Lauridsen.
The concert includes James MacMillan's breath-taking Miserere, which is emerging as one of this century's choral masterpieces. Scored for a single choir with divisi and soli in each voice-part, and also chanted passages in close harmony for male and then female voices, it is a haunting and exquisitely beautiful setting of part of psalm 51, the penitential text famously set in the 17th century by Gregorio Allegri.
We are delighted that the Finnish composer Jaakko Mäntyjärvi is coming to the concert to hear the world premiere of a dramatic work that we have commissioned from him. Iste Mundus is a setting of words from Carmina Burana, and is full of lush, dark harmonies and mournful melodic lines.
At the heart of the programme is, of course, Tallis’s spellbinding 40-part motet, Spem in Alium. Sung in the round and beginning with one voice and growing to 40 separate vocal lines, the effect in St George's is mesmerising with the music travelling around the hall in the ultimate surround sound experience.
