Virtuoso - music for choir and organ

Exultate Singers conducted by David Ogden
Richard Johnson Organ

The beautiful setting of St Mary Redcliffe Church with its magnificent acoustic and architecture is the perfect setting for this eclectic mix of virtuosic music for choir and organ. Following £800,000 of work, the church's 1912 Harrison & Harrison organ has been restored to its full glory and will be showcased in this concert which includes the wonderful anthems by Hubert Parry, I was glad and Blest Pair of Sirens, sung at the Royal Wedding.

The concert also features two large romantic choral pieces by Gerald Finzi, his setting of the Magnificat and the wonderful festival anthem Lo the full final sacrifice.

The Romantic theme is continued with the expansive setting of the Magnificat by Herbert Howells written for St Paul’s Cathedral.

As a contrast to all this English grandeur the concert includes the Scottish composer James MacMillan’s powerful settings of Latin American poems, Cantos Sagrados, a virtuosic display of skill from choir and organist.

Programme includes:

Parry I was glad
Finzi Magnificat
Holst Nunc dimittis
MacMillan Cantos sagrados
Finzi Lo, the full, final sacrifice
Howells Magnificat from St Paul's Service
Vaughan Williams Valiant-for-Truth
Parry Blest Pair of Sirens
