A Sense of the Divine

Come and experience an evening of sensational choral music sung in the intimate acoustic of St George’s, Bristol.

Exultate Singers will perform a beautiful sequence of music, from powerful outpourings of Elizabethan sacred music by William Byrd and Thomas Tallis, to settings of Shakespeare by Ralph Vaughan Williams, the 20th-century Finnish composer Jaakko Mäntyjärvi and jazz legend George Shearing.

At the heart of the concert is Tallis’ magnificent 40-part motet, Spem in Alium, which will be performed by singers encircling the audience to create an unforgettable experience. The effect of the gradual accumulation of voices from just one to forty must count as one of the most thrilling in choral music.

The programme also includes multi-choir music from Renaissance Spain and Whitacre's Her Sacred Spirit Soars, a Shakespearean influenced piece with wonderful, sensuous and rich harmonies.

Completing the programme are Samuel Barber’s Agnus Dei, his own profoundly moving arrangement of his Adagio for Strings, and Vaughan Williams’ Serenade to Music, setting verses from Shakespeare’s The Merchant of Venice. This setting of verses from Shakespeare's 'The Merchant of Venice' finds the two lovers, Lorenzo and Jessica, listening to music, gazing at the stars and revelling in the magic of the night; its power is such that it moved the composer Rachmaninov to tears, and he considered it the most affecting piece of music he had ever heard.

Enjoy complimentary Elizabeth Shaw chocolates to complete the sensory experience!
