This year’s High Sheriff's Concert pays tribute to the power of music not only to transform lives, but also to bring communities together. The performers include a gospel choir, a youth choir and a chamber choir, singing separately and together, in a joyful celebration of the power of song.

Exultate Singers will open the concert with the first performance of Every breath a song, a new work by their conductor David Ogden. This will be followed by the exquisite 40-part motet by Thomas Tallis, Spem in Alium, sung in the round.

Then the Bristol Youth Choir’s versatility and talent will be showcased in three songs, from Errollyn Wallen’s jazz-inspired setting of words by Shakespeare, to the sublime Cantique de Jean Racine by Gabriel Fauré.

The Renewal Choir closes the first half with passionate and joyful excerpts from Quincy Jones’ take on Handel’s Messiah.

As One is an exciting new choral work celebrating the vibrant diversity of Bristol. Featuring settings of poems inspired by interviews with local residents, alongside stories from the city’s rich history, the piece explores some of the many seams that tie together Bristol’s diverse communities, as well as considering some of the challenges facing the city today, in order to celebrate the creative and independent spirit that makes the city so unique. Bringing our three choirs together in song, As One displays a joyful fusion of musical styles, with influences ranging from epic oratorio to upbeat jazz and funk.
