A Sense of the Divine

Following last year's sell-out concert, Exultate Singers returns to St George's to perform a beautiful sequence of 'divine' music, both sacred and secular, from celebrated renaissance choral works to 20th century pieces and folk songs.

At the heart of this programme is Tallis' unforgettable motet, Spem in Alium, performed in the round. With its gradual accumulation of voices from just 1 to 40, it must count as one of the most thrilling pieces of music of all time. The choir also performs the rarely-heard 24-part Dixit Dominus by the 17th century Italian Orazio Benevoli, first performed in St Peter's Rome with six choirs positioned around the dome.

In this year of the Olympics when the eyes of the world look to London, the rest of the programme features the glories of English sacred and secular choral music with pieces by Purcell, Finzi, Ireland, Vaughan Williams, Tippett and Bristol-based composer David Bednall many with associations to some of the London's best known landmarks from Hampton Court to Westminster Abbey.
