SUMMARY:Holst - The Planets
DESCRIPTION:Exultate Singers\nCity of Bristol Choir\nBristol Metropolitan Orchestra\nJames Gilchrist tenor\nConducted by David Ogden and Tim Harrison \nGustav Holst The Planets Suite\nGerald Finzi Intimations of Immortality\nHans Zimmer Earth \nThree of Bristol’s leading ensembles collaborate for an unforgettable concert in the newly refurbished Bristol Beacon concert hall. \n \nFirst performed in Gloucester Cathedral in 1950\, Intimations of Immortality by Gerald Finzi is a setting of a poem by William Wordsworth. The words passionately describe a heavenly vision of nature\, expressing how the beauty and joy of the natural world can ignite memories of our childhood and make connections to our own souls and lives. The internationally-renowned tenor James Gilchrist sings the solo in this rarely-performed masterpiece. \nThe 150th anniversary of Gustav Holst’s birth is marked with a performance of one of the most famous of all orchestral works. The Planets Suite brings to life the character of our galaxy through sound\, each movement depicting a planet of our solar system.  The contrasting moods and orchestral colours relate either to the planets’ astrological characteristics\, or to the Roman god of that name.  From the relentless march of war-like Mars to the sweeping and expansive theme that identifies Jupiter\, the work ends sublimely with the orchestra accompanied by a wordless chorus of sopranos and altos spaced around the auditorium embracing the audience in the mystical sounds of Neptune. \nCompleting the programme is Earth by TV and film composer Hans Zimmer. Known for his music for Blue Planet II\, Gladiator\, The Last Samurai\, Pirates of the Caribbean\, The Dark Knight trilogy\, Dunkirk\, and No Time to Die\, this piece is a celebration for choir and orchestra of the beautiful planet we live on. With his trademark sense of scale and drama\, the composer perfectly captures the majesty and beauty of our home\, as if seen from space. \nTickets £15 to £28 for adults; under 26 year olds half price\, available online at bristolbeacon.org\, by phone on 0117 203 4040 and over the counter at Bristol Beacon.\nPlus Bristol Beacon booking fee of 9% \nWe are very grateful to Paragon Music Trust\, Finzi Friends and the Finzi Trust for the financial support that they have given us for this event. \n

SUMMARY:J.S. Bach - St John Passion
DESCRIPTION:Sunday 17 March 2024 at 7pm\nSt George’s Bristol \nExultate Singers\nBristol Ensemble Baroque\nPeter Davoren Evangelist / tenor\nFrederick Long Christus / bass\nKeri Fuge soprano\nMartha McLorinan alto\n\nConducted by David Ogden \nBook now \nFirst performed on Good Friday 1724\, Bach’s St John Passion is a dramatic account of Christ’s final days\, from the betrayal of Judas to the preparation for laying the body in the tomb.  \nExultate Singers is joined by an outstanding line up of soloists\, together with a specialist baroque orchestra from the Bristol Ensemble for this performance. The concert will be sung in German and takes place within a few days of the work’s 300th anniversary\, connecting us across the centuries to all the listeners who have experienced the power and immediacy of this remarkable music in a live performance. \nBach’s first great sacred masterpiece brings to life the humanity of the drama. The choir takes on the role of the people\, reflecting on the progression of the Easter story. The narrative is sung by the tenor Evangelist\, exquistely beautiful arias provide moments of contemplation\, and the entire work is bound together by chorales\, German hymns enhanced by Bach’s harmonic invention. The work culminates in the intense and loving chorus Ruht wohl. This is ultimately an optimistic piece\, the most personal and meditative of Bach’s Passion settings. \nTickets are £16 to £28\, half price for students in full time education and under 18s. \nBox office \nBook online at www.stgeorgesbristol.co.uk/st-john-passion\, by phone on 0117 929 4929 or over the counter at St George’s Bristol (St George’s booking fee applies) \nPeter Davoren – Evangelist and tenor arias \nPeter is a member of the BBC Singers and is in very high demand as a consort singer\, working with many illustrious groups such as the Monteverdi Choir\, Tenebrae\, the Sixteen\, Solomon’s Knot\, Musica Poetica and La nuova musica.
